If there was one thing Totchi hated, it was lies... being lied to, lying, any form of lies. And worst of all was lying to his boyfriend. Some things were worth compromising your principles for.

Totchi had gotten up that morning and gotten ready for school just like any other day, studiously ignoring the slight pout from his boyfriend when he left without mentioning Aoi's birthday. Not that Totchi thought that Aoi would REALLY think Totchi had forgotten completely. More likely Aoi would pout a few minutes after he'd left, and then decide that Totchi had plans to celebrate with him later, after school and after Aoi's students had left for the day.

Which was, of course, exactly what Totchi WANTED Aoi to think. Because then Aoi wouldn't be expecting anything at all before dinner time. And he certainly wouldn't expect Totchi to skip his classes so that he could pick up the cake he'd ordered several weeks ago and then slip quietly back into their apartment when he knew that Aoi would be distracted with his music, taking some time for his own music before his students started coming in that afternoon after school.

And he DEFINITELY wouldn't be expecting a pair of familiar arms to slip around him from behind as he was bent over his guitar. Nor the equally familiar set of lips pressing a kiss to his cheek and whispering "Happy birthday, love" against his ear. And if Aoi preferred to lean back into that embrace and just savor those arms around him for a moment before opening his eyes... well, Totchi certainly wasn't going to complain. It was no secret he was a cuddler anyway. Plus it sort of played into the script he had in his mind of how this was supposed to go.

Nuzzling Aoi's neck, Totchi reached to open the cake box he'd sat on the table before them.... and waited.

He didn't have long to wait. He knew from the body language the moment his lover had opened his eyes and read the words on the cake. Totchi felt Aoi stiffen momentarily before turning to blink up at him. Totchi had expected that, too, knew the reason for it, had thought about how he'd soothe his boyfriend's instinctive hesitation.

Totchi knew Aoi's history, knew that his lover had been engaged, had been set to marry the woman of his dreams, only to have those dreams crushed. He knew that his lover had been crushed and scarred by that experience as surely as Totchi had been scarred by his own. When they had met, they had both been battered and torn by emotional trauma, had both been looking, perhaps without realizing, for a way to ease that pain. And somehow they had been drawn together, and grown from that hurt and pieced each other back together carefully, adding in a piece of themselves as they went.

Totchi's hand moved to brush his fingers over the ring he'd given Aoi after they'd been dating a few months. With his other hand, he carefully set Aoi's guitar to the side so that he could settle himself in its place, wanting Aoi to be able to see his face as he spoke.

Still fingering the ring, Totchi spoke softly, before he lost his nerve. "Remember the day I gave you this ring? I told you I couldn't make you any promises then of forever, and we agreed to take things one day at a time. And that was a year and a half ago. Then I couldn't see myself making a commitment to anyone. Now I couldn't imagine my life without waking up beside you every day. That's why you didn't get a traditional birthday cake this time."

Aoi stared at Totchi for a long time before nodding. "I think I like this one much better. But just so you know," he added with a cheeky grin, "I don't plan to ever agree to a divorce."
