Random question
For anyone that might be able to answer this....

My new pc itself has shipped out, although the external drive and the new monitor hasn't. (I can use the monitor I have until the new one gets here, though) My question is this, though. If I take the hard drive out of this one, and add it into the new one to transfer all the stuff over from it, are they going to clash? (this one runs on winME, and the new one will have XP on it)

Also, do I need to manually reinstll everything, or can I take a shortcut and just copy everything from Program files to Program Files? *is lazy* xP

ooo...when we changed our information onto our new computer we put all our information on floppy discs and then transfered the information from the floppy disks to the new computer![im not sure if that's what you were asking]!!
[identity profile] bubblegumtotchi.livejournal.com on January 16th, 2007 04:32 pm (UTC)
I *could* do that...but with over 4 gigs of pictures alone, I'd probably end up spending more on floppies than I did on the whole new computer. :P

Hmmmm... good question... Well... take this advice or leave it... it's your choice and please, take warning - this is from the bother....

He, who is a Computer Technician II by the way, which, frankly means nothing to me personally, says...

You should have no problem connecting the old drive to the new computer as long as you make sure that you have it set as a SLAVE drive. The MASTER drive should read it. He also says though, he's not too sure about XP reading ME files because ME has a FAT file system, while XP is a NTFS sile system...

I think that the worst thing that could happen would be that the new system won't read the old drive, but that's just me...

Hmmmmm... if worse comes to worse, and I don't know if you have a DVD drive on the old system or not, is that you can take a DVD and copy the files as data to the DVD instead of trying to make a movie... that's how I copy large amounts of files anyway... hmmmm... I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure that XP will be able to read the files, because it's ME that would not be able to read the XP files... and would cause serious problems on your computer if you tried to do it in the reverse....

Yeah... I kind of hope this helped and not confused you, but the bother is only a phone call away if you need to ask anything else, k??

OMG!!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!

...gomen nasai... I hit enter before saying that!!

LOL

LOL I actually know a *tiny* bit more than I tend to let on that I do, so for the most part, yeah that did make sense. xP That's pretty much what I was thinking. It *should* read from ME to XP, since XP is the newer version, but wouldn't the other way around. (then again, this *IS* MicroShaft XP) But tell him thanks. I'm hoping it works smoothly. And, according to the email I got today, it looks like I may even get it a couple of days ahead of schedule. (Friday instead of Monday ZOMG!!!!)

AND OMG I LOVE YOU TOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! XD

OMGKATSYAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I didn't mean to imply that you didn't, Dee-chan... I just never feel like I explain things well enough for people to understand... LOL Anyway... I hope it works because I hate moving tons of files myself...

*kicks old HD with 80 GBs of files on it*

But... I am so glad that you might be getting it even earlier!!! YAY!!!

Aishiteru, Dee-chan!!

I just thought of something else... you can probably run a test first, ne? Take a CD and copy some random files onto it and then see if the new computer will read them... I would think that would tell you whether or not it would work, ne?

Good Luck, Dee-chan!!!

I forgot to say, no, this one doesn't have a DVD drive, and it's not reading the CD burner, either. *sigh*

But I do have some CDs I burned before with some stuff on them that I can try, and if worst comes to worst, I can always just manually install what I absolutely *MUST* have, and wait on the rest until my USB external drive gets here and just copy everything to it and tranfer it over. XDD (I'm just impatient xP)

When is the external HD getting there? If you're going to put all of the files on the external drive, maybe you should just wait anyway? You don't want to have to do a defrag right after you get the external drive, ne?

btw... I forgot to add that I lvoe what you call MS... I happen to call them MajorlySucks myself LOL

I'm sure that you know what you're doing... Good Luck!!

Not sure exactly when it'll be here. It hasn't shipped out yet. Should be one day next week, though.

The new computer will read the files of the old one. You're not going to copy the system files, that's for sure. As for programs, you could just copy specific files (like brushes, textures, fonts) into the new pc. They'll work.

As for the HDD stuff. I did it once. I took my hard drive to work (the computer shop) and my boss connected it to one of the computers there. Since both hard drives contained Win XP, the computer was dizzy for a moment. Couldn't decide which drive to use to load XP (and do as bryses said: put your old hard drive as SLAVE) but then it worked nicely. And I copied my movies to a DVD that way. So it'll be easy to copy files to the new HDD ^_^

And it's always better to reinstall stuff. fresh and new and you won't have to worry about the program not functioning because one of the system files sucks ^_^

*sigh* That means I have to find some of my crap..er..stuff. ^_^
[identity profile] scwolf-10k.livejournal.com on January 17th, 2007 01:50 am (UTC)
XD is your comp still being silly and making you stay away from MSN?
[identity profile] bubblegumtotchi.livejournal.com on January 17th, 2007 01:51 am (UTC)
It is. I can't stay on but a few minutes at a time because it starts to overheat. But the good news is that it looks like I may have the new tower by the weekend. XD
[identity profile] scwolf-10k.livejournal.com on January 17th, 2007 01:58 am (UTC)
YAY!
My fan overheats all the time. Which is why I have the side cover off. But you have cats, and they might decide they want to sleep next to the motheboard. So, you can't do that. ^_^
[identity profile] bubblegumtotchi.livejournal.com on January 17th, 2007 02:01 am (UTC)
My desk actually has a cabinet that the tower sits inside of..which is big enough to put a fan in there, too. So I *do* have the cover off...AND a fan in there blowing on it, but it still overheats. The CPU fan is completely gone out in it.

Speaking of...it's starting to make funny smells again. Which means time to go. *sigh* Love to everyone! *glomps and smoochies*!!!!!
[identity profile] scwolf-10k.livejournal.com on January 17th, 2007 02:07 am (UTC)
it must be dusty :P (mine used to stink too) clean the dust off the CPU fan AND the metal thingy that's on the CPU. Careful not to break it when you take it off though!

*lots of love and glomps and smoochies*
[identity profile] bubblegumtotchi.livejournal.com on January 17th, 2007 03:08 am (UTC)
It's not dusty. I already took a close look at it, and kept a watch on it. It's burnt out/not working....aka dead.
